Thoughts that are a day late and a dollar short…
-Both UK and UofL left a game on the table this past Saturday. UofL fought hard to overcome an early deficit, but could not hold on against a wounded FSU squad. UK made a game of it after a similar early deficit, but could not make enough plays late to get over the hump. Disappointing to both fan bases certainly.
-Neither loss is a death sentence. Both were conference road games and no matter the sport or the opponent, it is always hard to win in conference on the road. It just is.
-The Cats however are at a bit of a crossroads. Going to South Carolina presents an opportunity to go forward. A win makes then 3-2 with the rest of the schedule relatively light (excluding Georgia). 9 wins would still be a real possibility. A loss however could cause a real spiral.
-Baseball would be better off going to an old school league format. Put fifteen teams in a race for five playoff spots. Give an advantage for the regular season pennant winner and smaller one for 2nd place and so on. Make being fifth the worst possible spot. But with smaller divisions, we have no real races left anywhere.
-The Cubs are essentially eliminated. I will lose no sleep over it. I find Joe Maddon repulsive.
-Folks are comparing Patrick Mahomes’ numbers to Troy Aikman’s. As friend of the show Terry Brown (Cats Talk Wednesday) points out on Twitter, the comparison is absurd. Aikman played in the era of the feature back where as the current NFL makes the term “pass happy” a vast understatement. Besides, comparison is the thief of joy.
-UCF finally lost a regular season game for the first time in three seasons. The UCF haters have used the fact to justify UCF’s exclusion in the last two CFB playoffs. This is absurd. One, this team is not last year’s team nor the prior year’s team. It stands on its own merits as do the others. Two, anytime folks begin to talk about strength of schedule, the conversation persists as if mid majors have any say in it. They don’t. They play who they can.
-Further, for the first time in three seasons, UCF football will have been eliminated from title contention the way all teams should be eliminated, with an actual loss.
-The Washington Nationals will be in the playoffs despite starting the year 19-31. Every year we pay attention to the standings in early Spring. Every year we shouldn’t.
-The two biggest free agents in last year’s market were Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. Neither will be in the playoffs while each will watch his former team in the postseason. It takes more than one player to make a baseball team.
Until next week….
