While it may not be the most original of ideas, I have decided to do a random thoughts column every Tuesday. Feel free to read, share, and give me some random responses in the comments section. And as always, join us on Wednesday night for The KY Sports Guys Show Live on 99.1 The Hoss
-The Terry Wilson injury has me pretty bummed as it does most of BBN. I don’t think it is a season ender for the Cats as the team as a whole is solid. But that is not really the point. Terry Wilson is the QB who delivered ten wins, a New Year’s bowl victory, and has done so the whole while enduring some fairly tough criticism. Seems like a stand up guy. I hate it for him. As a person.
-Florida provides the first real test of the year and my guess is that Coach Stoops has held back some early so as to have a few new things to throw at the Gators. We shall see.
-I have never been a UofL fan but I have to admit, they have finally got it right. Tyra is killing it with Chris Mack and Scott Satterfield. Both seem like guys I’d love to hang out with and people that I would bring my kids around. What a departure. For those who thought losing Jurich was a death knell for UofL athletics, think again.
-And if you have already forgotten that many fought tooth and nail to keep Jurich, here is a reminder (and a humble “I told you so.”)
-The Tennessee Volunteers are not good. This does not bother me at all and in fact makes me happy. Although I try very hard not to revel in other folk’s misery, this and perhaps a future demise of Duke basketball (were it to happen) are exceptions.
-Still, it is worth noting that despite an 0-2 start UT football did a really good thing recently by supporting a young student who made a homemade UT shirt only to be ridiculed by a handful of his classmates. A simple Google search will get you several articles for more specifics, but a tip of the hat to the Vols for doing a good thing.
-Speaking of UT where do they rank currently as a formerly big time program that just isn’t anymore? Nebraska has to be right there. They dropped a sure win at Colorado. They won’t beat Oklahoma…again. Or perhaps UCLA who dropped a game for the first time ever to San Diego State. Or Indiana basketball. DePaul, St. Johns in hoops. As Springsteen so eloquently said, “Glory Days, they’ll pass you by…”
-The NFL is back and had a mix of duds and drama. You may never watch a worse game than the GB-Chicago one to open. You may never see a more exciting one than the NO-Houston one last night.
-Still, college football is the better watch. Seeing Army go in to the big house and scare the bejeebees out of Michigan is only one example. But what makes it better than the pros is variety. Army runs the ball every time. They run an offense that most have long since bypassed. They do not care. Variety…it really is the spice of life.
-A couple weeks ago I posted a piece called “Finder’s Fee” in which I bemoaned how little credit people get for being the first to recognize something. Then lo and behold TheStocktony stumbled on Zach Bryan. We had him on Show 132. And guess what? He has since blown up (not because he was on our show). I wish him well, but when he is on the big stage and being interviewed by the three letter big media, remember The KY Sports Guys (and namely TheStocktony) was first.
-So many folks out there suggested that Lamar Jackson was not a QB. So many folks were wrong.
Until next week,
