For the last three years, I have worked in the summer as a little league umpire and I have encountered every possible scenario…or so I thought.
It always amaze me when it comes to ten years olds and catcher’s gear that it requires a pit crew to assemble four pieces of catcher’s gear on to a kid. You would think these people are working on the next shuttle up into space.
This past Monday I had one of more the laughable calls I have ever had to make in my young umpiring career. A young man probably had the hit of the game, an absolute shot to the fence, and in ten and under that is most of the time a home run. As he made his way up the third base line, he gets home and COMPLETELY strides over the plate as the crowd is going crazy.
Lucky for the opposing team, a coach caught the mistake and the fielder touched home with the ball and as much as you hate to rip a homerun away from a kid…that’s exactly what I did.
