Tonight’s Metcalfe County vs Adair County game will go into the books as an 8-7 Hornets victory. And, statistically, the two-point conversion that sealed the win for mighty Metcalfe will be nothing more than a pass from Dial to Zurmehly.
Yet, if you were there (or listening to the call of CoachJHurt and myself), you know it was much more.
Held scoreless for most of the game, the Hornets scored late. Then, with under three minutes on the clock, the play call came: “Philadelphia.”
The stands, the track, the press box…all were replete with wide-eyed gawkers, mere spectators, and none knew what awaited—CoachJHurt and I included.
Formation shift into wildcat…run left…reverse…pass to the QB in the front corner of the end zone…catch…CONVERSION GOOD!…8-7!
(Wait, was it?! Yes! Are we sure? Yes! We just saw the Philly Special; Doug Pederson would be proud!…….Let’s rename it: “The Hornet Special.”)
In the most unpredictable, most fantastical, most wonderful way, the Metcalfe County Hornets won tonight. Straight from the largest stage to a small one, but no less exciting. Hornets win!
Special…yeah, I’d say so.
