After game one the hyperbole was in full force. The question that seems to be tossed around ad nauseam these days was so again. Could Duke beat the Cavaliers (Cleveland, not Virginia)? Is 40-0 possible? Can anyone stay within double digits? Will we ever learn?
Of course not. Like Sisyphus, we fans will continue to roll the stone up the hill only to watch it roll back down. And we will do it time and time again.
Is this Duke team really good? Yes. Is it a favorite to win it all. Absolutely. Is it invincible. Much like The Black Knight from Monty Python, it most certainly is not. Perhaps losses to Gonzaga and Syracuse and a lucky win at Florida State are in fact merely flesh wounds. But, those results go to show that in college hoops, anybody can win or lose on any night to most opponents.
Duke is no different.
Of course folks will point to injuries or foul trouble or whatever. No matter. these things happen. they may happen again. Sans injuries to Keith Bogans or Alex Poythress or Dale Brown, who knows what might have been. But those guys were injured. And the results count just the same.
Which is what makes college hoops so great. The results really do matter. Not opinion or polls or talking heads. To win it all you have to win all the games in the tournament. Period. Can Duke do so? Sure. Is it a lock? Not a chance…
