When I was a kid getting a Lexington Herald was a true gift and when I opened the sports page and found Chuck Culpepper had written his random notes column, well Christmas had truly come early. So with greatest reverence…
-College football as a sport is perhaps the best out there. Entertaining, dramatic, skilled but not infallible nor predictable. It is a great sport for fans. The pomp, the pageantry, it is wonderful.
-But it is also the worst. No sport, not even golf or yachting is as elitist as CFB. No sport has a worse way to determine its champion. The sport with a litany of mythical champions continues to care more about opinions than playing it out on the field. It is the only sport on Earth in which a team in the league can not lose and yet have no chance to win.
-Which brings me to Notre Dame. The Irish predictably took a beating last night. But I am not one to play the results. Nor do I scoff at going 12-0 in the regular schedule. For a true champion to be crowned, all contenders deserve to be eliminated on the field, not in a board room. Therefore, Notre Dame deserved its opportunity.
-Which brings me to UCF. The,y like the Irish, did not lose this year. Unlike the Irish, they are not old money. And so they are left with a trip to the Fiesta and a date with LSU. My eyes say they lose by a lot. But my eyes nor yours nor anyone else’s should determine a champion.
-UCF unlike Notre Dame plays in the conference that has offered. To my knowledge the ACC nor SEC has asked them to dance. They do sometimes offer terribly one sided contracts. But they will not open the doors to the country club and ask the Knights to dinner.
-Therefore, how can one hold UCF’s schedule against them? It is like keeping Metcalfe County’s valedictorian out of Harvard because Metcalfe is not an elite east coast prep school. That argument would say that had Metcalfe’s valedictorian went to the elite school then he or she would finish middle of the pack at best. I reject such logic.
-Further, when given that one shot at playing in a New Years Six Bowl, UCF trounced SEC West champion Auburn. Yet the experts and elitists and SEC sycophants dismiss the result. Of course they do.
-Some may argue all college sports have a selection committee and so all college sports have to leave folks out. True. But in every other sport each team left out has lost at least one game and had a route to get in that did not include the committee. If UCF’s basketball team wins its conference tournament then it is in the dance. No questions asked. Not football.
-In fact, I looked up undefeated basketball teams not invited to the NCAA basketball tournament. I couldn’t find one. The closest I got was the 25-0 UK team which rejected its invitation when Cliff Hagan and others were declared ineligible due to being graduate students.
-Speaking of UK, my friend and co host of this site, TheStocktony, says it every year, yet every year a few in BBN forget…trust Cal. The Cats look like they have figured it out. Convincing wins over UNC and UofL make this squad a contender…again.
-UofL meanwhile did not play well yesterday. But, I like what they are doing and what Chris Mack brings to the table. The program is in good hands.
-Seton Hall may be better than we thought.
-High school hoops has ended phase one as all the Christmas tournaments are over. Should be a fun 2019…see you then!
