When I woke up this morning, I felt like I needed someone to pinch me.
Is this real life?
I was three in 1977. I just don’t remember that team, those superstars. Art Still wears a Chiefs’ uni in my mind. My first football memory is of the NFL, Steelers vs. Cowboys, Super-Bowl XIII, 1979, and then it’s only faint.
And speaking of faint, wasn’t all of Big Blue Nation about to during that final drive, when we saw that…wait a minute, this thing is going somewhere.
Terry Wilson is slinging the ball downfield. Out of nowhere comes little-used Senior David Bouvier making two huge catches that the Cats never, ever make on a drive that’s never, ever quite like this. Getting close and an SEC official makes a controversial interference call….and it goes in our favor(!?!).
Where I am, four grown men stand, eight eyes glued to the TV, to the final, untimed play. All of Big Blue Nation stands for this 6-1 team. It is fandom at its purest: we would have been standing, too, for a 1-6 team.
(But it wouldn’t have gone that way. It never goes that way. I think we all have experienced enough to know that CJ Conrad drops that ball, or Terry Wilson throws it in the dirt. Or maybe it slips out of Wilson’s hand and a Missouri D Tackle rumbles wheezing 98 yards for some extra egg on our face and a front door cover for Mizzou bettors. It just never works out.
(Kentucky football is never 7-1…Kentucky football can’t be playing a game for a division championship…Kentucky football doesn’t reside in the top 20 (oh, top 10, you say)—-nah, never.)
So…….this is how winning feels. Yeah, I like this much better.
This is real life……
